Hand Painted Blue Tit on Stone - Beach Pottery & Pebble Art Ornament (1662)

£35.00

A little stone ornament featuring a blue tit, handmade using antique beach pottery, stones, pottery and pebbles found washed-up on the beautiful beaches of the East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. The pottery I use is often 19th Century antique beach china - mostly Victorian.

This tiny seaside scene features a blue tit, hand-painted in metallic blues and greens onto plain white beach pottery. The blue tit sits on a piece of green stoneware and a piece of spongeware sits alongside with a beautiful pattern of a pink flower. Silver plated wire has been used to make the feet and beak for the blue tit and a seagull in the sky.

The scene has been mounted onto a piece of stone from the beach measuring approximately 7cm wide by 8cm high. The ornament is freestanding. (Item: 1662)

These fragments of patterned pottery and china gather between the rocks and pebbles at low tide. Many of these pieces originate from the 1800’s and 1900’s, sometimes dating back to the Victorian and Regency eras when the nearby town of Kirkcaldy was at the heart of the Scottish pottery industry. Despite being tumbled and smoothed by the Scottish waves for so long, the patterns and colours remain wonderfully vibrant and the transformative power of the sea ensures each fragment is entirely unique.
