Pebble Seagull, Pottery Whale & Berwick Law - Framed Driftwood Beach Art Picture (No. 1598)

£45.00

This framed seaside beach collage features a tiny seagull and whale, all handmade using antique beach pottery, driftwood, stones and pebbles found washed-up on the beautiful beaches of the East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. The pottery I use is often 19th Century antique beach china - mostly Victorian.

A little seagull made from plain pottery sits on a piece of antique beach pottery featuring the famous willow pattern. I've included a photo of an original plate - I'm sure you'll recognise it! The seagull's wings are made from a fragment of cobalt blue pottery. Alongside, swimming in the waves, is a little whale made from a beautifully patterned piece of blue china. Another piece of yellow stripy pottery forms Berwick Law on the horizon. A gnarled piece of sea-worn driftwood creates the foreground. Silver plated wire has been used to make the feet and beak for the seagulls, water spouts for the whale and a seagull in the sky!

The piece comes in a wooden box frame and measures 18cm square. Please choose your frame colour (either white wood or rustic washed wood) using the drop down menu. (Item:1598)

These fragments of patterned pottery and china gather between the rocks and pebbles at low tide. Many of these pieces originate from the 1800’s and 1900’s, sometimes dating back to the Victorian and Regency eras when the nearby town of Kirkcaldy was at the heart of the Scottish pottery industry. Despite being tumbled and smoothed by the Scottish waves for so long, the patterns and colours remain wonderfully vibrant and the transformative power of the sea ensures each fragment is entirely unique.
