Frame Colour

A handmade pebble art framed picture featuring a cute seal, sailing boat and Berwick Law. Everything is made in the East Neuk of Fife, Scotland from antique sea pottery, stones, pebbles and driftwood collected whilst beach-combing on our beautiful Scottish beaches. The ceramics and china I find is often from the 19th Century - mostly Victorian.

This seaside scene features a seal, hand-painted onto a piece of dark beach slate.Seals are a common sight around our coastline! The seal is basking on a lovely piece of driftwood. A little sailing boat or yacht is bobbing in the whales alongside. It's sails are made from beautiful pieces of transfer-ware china. The right hand sail has a partial makers mark. I've traced this to a potter called Anthony Shaw, an earthenware manufacturer from Staffordshire working between 1851-1900. This particular mark includes "& Son" which specifically dates it to between 1882-1898! (I've included a photo of the original makers mark I found on the internet!) The left sail has a delicate floral pattern. A gorgeous piece of leafy patterned china makes up the Bass Rock on the horizon. Silver plated wire has been used to make the mast for the boat, a silver fish in the sea and a seagull in the sky.

The piece comes in a wooden box frame and measures 18cm square. Please choose your frame colour (either white wood or rustic washed wood). (Item: 2250

These fragments of patterned pottery and china gather between the rocks and pebbles at low tide. Many of these pieces originate from the 1800’s and 1900’s, sometimes dating back to the Victorian and Regency eras when the nearby town of Kirkcaldy was at the heart of the Scottish pottery industry. Despite being tumbled and smoothed by the Scottish waves for so long, the patterns and colours remain wonderfully vibrant and the transformative power of the sea ensures each fragment is entirely unique.
