Tiny Framed Sea Glass Heart - Rare Pink Scottish Beach Glass Coastal Wall Art

A sea glass heart picture handmade from tiny pieces of rare pink Scottish beach glass. The sea glass washes up on the gorgeous beaches in the East Neuk of Fife in Scotland. 

The heart collage comes in a beautiful frame with a white mount. The heart itself measures 1.75 inches (4.5cm) wide and the frame measures 6x6 inches. The frame can be hung on the wall but also has a stand on the back so can be freestanding on a shelf. 

There is a particuarly special piece of glass on the right hand side with a floral embossed pattern that can be seen when turned towards the light. Much of the rest of the glass in this heart is "flash glass". Flash glass is when a layer of cheaper clear glass was covered with a thin layer of pink. This was a more cost effective way of producing coloured glass in the early 1900's. You would not have been able to see the clear layer underneath when the piece was whole but the broken and smoothed glass reveals the lovely layers of white and pink.

Much of the sea glass I use dates back to the Victorian era and is known as 'mermaid tears'. When sailors were lost at sea, the mermaids would cry and their tears would wash up on the shore. The glass has been reshaped and smoothed over decades of tumbling in the Scottish waves!
